Voice over IP and SIP

Internet Protocol (IP) is the technology used to send information over the Internet. The same protocol is used to send information between computers and peripherals within an office or building on an office Intranet.

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a technology for transmitting ordinary telephone calls over the Internet or office intranet using IP. These voice calls may be within your building or routed out over the Internet. VoIP therefore allows organisations to converge their voice and computer data communications. The technology enables you to route free inter-office telephone calls, even to home workers and international offices.

Significant competitive advantages are obtained by converging the voice and data networks into one. The migration of telephony into the PC environment creates completely new communication possibilities, which would be difficult or impossible to achieve using a traditional phone system.

Some advantages of software, VoIP phone system:
  • Free inter-office calls (multiple sites, home and remote workers)
  • On-screen dialling
  • Voicemail
  • Auto-attendant
  • Screen popping
  • Home working
  • Integration with Microsoft Outlook
  • Scripting
  • Database integration
  • On-screen consoles and monitoring
  • Use a single cable to each desk for both telephone and data
Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is a protocol developed as a standard for initiating, modifying, and terminating an interactive user session that involves multimedia elements such as video, voice, instant messaging, online games, and virtual reality.

Swyx is fully SIP compliant, making it possible to use ITSP (Internet Telephony Service Providers) to make phone calls independent from the public telephone network. Additionally, third party SIP compliant hardware and software applications can be used with Swyx.

Using ITSP services for international calls can be a huge cost saving.

It gives you the option not to use BT lines for all your calls, and the system will work when BT phase out ISDN lines. This is planned to take place is 2009, and a “traditional” phone system would have to be replaced at this time.
